みなさん、こんにちは！

自己紹介がてら、私の英語に対しての思いを綴らせて頂きます。

私は幼少期、アメリカのジョージア州アトランタというところに住んでいました。

日本に帰ってきてからなるべく英語を忘れないようにと、都内の帰国子女の多い高校に通ったりもしましたが、やはり忘れますよね、英語...。

だって普通に生活していて使いませんから...(笑)

社会に出てからも、「英語って実は社会に出ても使わないし、いらなくない？」と思うことがほとんどで、

正直言って、『英語を話せることの必要性』を感じませんでした。

しかし、子供ができ、子供を海外に連れていくようになってから、考えに変化が起きました。

海外の旅行先で起きた問題を、私が英語を話せることで解決してきた様子を間近で見た子供から、

何気なく、「英語が話せないと、困ったときに誰にも助けてもらえないんだねー。」と言われたのです。

しかも、日本語訛りの英語、所謂『サムライ・イングリッシュ』ではコミュニケーションが取りづらいということも子供が気付きました。

さらに、地球上のほとんどの国が日本語が通じない国であることも、改めて気付かされました。

現在、英語を公用語・準公用語としている国の総人口は、世界の人口の27％です。

これは『普段使っている人』という条件下なので、『英語が通じる人』はもっともっと多いはずです。

世界には80億もの人がおり、ほとんどの国では英語が通じます。

このうち日本語だけを話す人というのは、日本の人口である1.2億人だけです。

この数字を見ただけでも、市場が国外にあるということは一目瞭然です。

このことから、ビジネスの世界でも英語力が必要であると言えます。

また、スポーツの世界ではどうでしょうか。

海外でプレイしている日本人の選手たちが、皆さん英語でインタビューに答えている様子を見たことがあると思います。

海外のチームに入り、チームメイトや監督と意思疎通を図るのには、英語がやはり必要です。

学術や研究の分野でも、学術書がほとんど英語、発表もすべて英語というのは有名な話ですね。

私のモットーは“You Only Live Once”です。

人生一度きり。

あとで後悔したくないので、『やりたい！』と思ったことは何でも即座にやるようにしています。

死に際になって、『ああ、あの国に行ってみたかったな...。』とか『外国人の友達ほしかったな...。』という後悔はなるべくしたくないですよね。

『グローバル化』という言葉が死語になりつつあるこの時代、『英語は話せて当たり前』という時代になると言われ続けて大分経つと思いませんか？

これから社会に出ていく私たちの子供も、私たち自身も、実際に『英語は話せて当たり前』となれば、

今後世界に出てできることも増えますし、なにより、楽しみが増えると思いませんか？

堅苦しい話を抜きにしても、世界の人たちとコミュニケーションを取る上で、単純に『英語が通じたときの喜び』を感じて頂けたらと思っています！

Hi, everyone!

I'm going to talk a little bit about myself and my thoughts on speaking English.

I used to live in Atlanta, Georgia USA when I was a little kid.

After coming back to Japan, I went to a high school where lots of returnees go and tried not to forget my English skills.

But...

Unfortunately, I forgot most of my English. lol

It's hard for us to remember things we don't use in everyday life.

After I became a working member of society, I was always thinking, "Actually, I almost never use English in Japanese society. Do we really need English skills?"

I wasn't really sure whether we need an ability to speak English or not.

But, I began to think in a different way after I took my kids abroad for a family trip.

By watching me solving problems that had occurred with my English speaking skills during the trip, my daughter said, "It seems that no one would help us if we aren't able to communicate with English."

She realized it was hard for foreign people to understand us if we could only use 'Samurai-English' as well.

Also, I once again noticed that most of the people on earth DO NOT understand Japanese.

At present, 27% of the world population are using English as their first and second language.

That means there are much more people who can "understand" English.

There are approximately 8 billion people in the world compared to 120 million of that in Japan.

Considering the comparison between the number of English speakers and Japanese speakers, it's very obvious that the most of the business takes place outside Japan.

Well, let's look inside the world of sports.

You might have seen on TV that the athletes who are playing overseas are answering to the interviewer in English.

To have communication with the teammates and head coach, the ability of speaking English is indispensable.

It's been a long time since it was said that English skills are needed in the field of research and academic scenes. We need to use English when we make both survey and presentation.

My motto is YOLO, which stands for "You Only Live Once".

I've set my mind to do everything I want to do right away.

I never want to regret when I die.

"I've always wanted to go to that country..."

"I wished I could've had friends from foreign country..."

I don't want you to think this way on your last day on earth.

It's been so long since I heard someone say, "Someday we Japanese would be able to speak English as it were our mother tongue". When in the world is it going to become real? lol

But, don't you think it would be so great if we and our kids could truly speak English like our mother tongue?

I simply want you to feel how wonderful it would be to communicate with foreign people!
